This is great Anne! I remember these from grandma too and always loved their design. I also have salt and pepper shakers shaped like Ball and clear glass.

Artist's Description

My husband's grandmother kept a few of her vintage ball fruit jars and she gave them to me many years ago. I love the blue color of the glass and love that she used them to can fruits many decades ago. I use them as vases for summer flowers from the garden and sometimes I just set them on the kitchen window sill and let the light shine through the pretty glass.

This is a painting inspired by a photograph that I made of one of my favorite Ball Fruit Jars, the one with the glass lid and the wire that holds the lid in place, reflected in the glass of my kitchen table.

This popular glass lid closure was known as the Lightning closure, named after the first jar to use it, which was embossed with "Lightning" on the side. More commonly, this is often known as a bail closure, or French Kilner — it consists of a metal wire arrangement with a lever which, when pivoted downward against the side of the jar, applies leverage to a glass lid, clamping it down over a separate rub...

About Anne Kitzman

Anne Kitzman

I am a professional photographer and artist, have been shooting digital since 1999 and before that I used film. I do a lot of stock photography work, shoot travel images for tourism companies, shoot portraits and just retired from wedding photography. I think I've done it all at one time or another in my 25 years as a photographer. I also paint from my photographs. I love scenery, landscapes, flowers, barns and houses, to name just a few. I have photographed and painted literally hundreds of barns and buildings and am working a little each day to upload my work to this site. Since I work for the tourism industry, I have a lot of travel imagery and some of it has also been painted or sketched. Thanks for visiting my art...
